Description

HMG (Human Menopausal Gonadotropin) contains equal amounts of follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) derived from the urine of postmenopausal women. This gonadotropin preparation is established for stimulating ovarian and testicular function in fertility treatment.

Mechanism of Action

HMG provides exogenous FSH and LH to stimulate gonadal function. FSH promotes follicular development and spermatogenesis, while LH triggers ovulation and supports Leydig cell testosterone production. No detrimental effect of the LH activity of HMG on clinical outcomes has been observed in IVF; in fact, beneficial effects on fertilization rates were demonstrated compared to pure FSH (Westergaard et al., 1996). Combined FSH/LH activity supports complete reproductive axis stimulation (Gordon & Sauer, 1995).

Research Applications

  • Fertility and assisted reproduction research (Westergaard et al., 1996)
  • Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism studies
  • Spermatogenesis stimulation
  • Ovulation induction research
  • HPG axis restoration

Research Overview

HMG is a synthetic peptide compound used in laboratory research settings. Researchers studying peptide biology use this compound to investigate cellular signaling pathways, receptor binding affinities, and structure-activity relationships. Each batch is manufactured under controlled conditions and verified through HPLC and mass spectrometry analysis to ensure consistency across experimental replicates.
