Melanotan I
PH-MT1-001
Specifications
Description
Melanotan I (Afamelanotide) is a linear analog of alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (α-MSH) with enhanced stability. This peptide selectively activates MC1R for pigmentation effects and is the only melanocortin approved for medical use.
Mechanism of Action
Melanotan I ([Nle4-D-Phe7]-α-MSH) binds primarily to MC1R melanocortin receptors on melanocytes, stimulating eumelanin production and skin pigmentation. The modifications confer resistance to enzymatic degradation and prolonged duration of action (Fabrikant et al., 2013). Clinical studies demonstrate its efficacy in mitigating photosensitivity in erythropoietic protoporphyria patients (Harms et al., 2009).
Research Applications
- Melanogenesis and pigmentation studies (Fabrikant et al., 2013)
- Photoprotection research (Harms et al., 2009)
- Erythropoietic protoporphyria treatment
