Description
Melanotan I (afamelanotide) is a linear, stabilized analog of alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). The modifications make it resistant to enzymatic breakdown and give it a longer duration than native α-MSH.
Mechanism
It binds mainly the MC1R receptor on melanocytes and stimulates eumelanin production. The structural changes ([Nle4-D-Phe7]-α-MSH) account for its stability and extended action (Fabrikant et al., 2013). Its effect on light sensitivity in erythropoietic protoporphyria has been studied in clinical research (Harms et al., 2009).
